Professional Stand Up Paddler / SUP Ambassador / 2 x ISA SUP Surfing Gold Medalist
Sean Poynter began surfing at the age of 10 when his family made the move from Ohio to Florida. A talented athlete, surfing came naturally to Poynter, and it wasn’t long before his talent was recognized with sponsorships by some of the largest corporations in the industry – Volcom, Electric, Freestyle, and Globe, to name a few. Through these relationships, Sean travelled to photo-shoots and press events that would eventually be published in many popular industry magazines such as ESM, Mundo Rad, and Surfer. In the summer of 2009, Poynter was introduced to stand up paddling (SUP) and just a few months after catching his first wave on a stand-up board, he was jet-setting around the globe under the wing of SUP’s leading brand, Starboard, as their brand ambassador. During his travels Poynter had the unique opportunity to test boards and attend photo shoots for Starboard’s global ad campaigns in exotic locations including Bali, Thailand, and Hawaii. Now based in San Diego, Poynter represents a new breed of radical young stand up paddling athletes who are breaking boundaries in the sport. Poynter proves SUP can be taken beyond flat water and into the waves for electrifying surfing performances.
In validating the claim, Poynter earlier in 2013 was crowned Gold medalist in SUP Surfing at the ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboarding Championships in Peru. Poynter showcased a dominant performance in the final where he scored the events highest heat total of a 17.83 out of a possible 20. Poynter, alongside a few others, was there representing team USA. Poynter also is a competitor on the Stand Up World Tour representing one of the few US mainlanders. Here Poynter’s progressive, powerful, and graceful surfing style consistently shines through. The tour, which is comprised of a wide range of international competitors, commenced its 2012 season in December where Poynter finished 2nd overall in the world ranking, narrowly missing out on 1st overall. His most notable finishes during the season were those in Tahiti at the Sapinus Pro where he took 1st followed by a 3rd in the Caribbean at Destination X Pro. The 2012 season marked Poynter’s second full year on tour and looks forward to 2013 as a chance to better his current ranking and be crowned tour champion.
When Poynter is not traveling and competing, he enjoys taking newcomers out on stand up paddleboards, climbing, diving, and playing cello.
