Everybody has a story and it’s important to share and listen to each other! @dexcom has partnered up with @ericpaslay in his podcast, “Level with Me”, sharing different angles of everyday life with type 1 diabetes from type 1 diabetics.
.
I’ve learned so much by listening to other people’s stories and experiences. It has helped me manage my diabetes better.

Today marks 4 years since I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. May 18th, 2015 was the best and worst day of my life filled first with excitement, followed by uncertainty, fear, and most of all, frustration. In the morning I graduated high school and in the evening I was diagnosed with Type 1. I didn’t even know what diabetes was, let alone type 1.
.
That year was my first year sponsored by Starboard SUP. My dreams were high and I was set on achieving them. Getting diagnosed felt like the biggest slap in the face to everything I’d ever thought I could achieve and everything I had worked for. I didn’t know what I could do now that I had a disease, but I knew that I still wanted to be as good an athlete the day after my diagnosis as I was the day before.
.
I have learned so much about my body over the last four years. Type 1 Diabetes is like shooting a moving target in the dark, it’s not formulaic, it’s always changing. Hormones, adrenaline, and travel all affect blood sugar levels and insulin needs. I still get my insulin calculations wrong. However, when my blood sugar sits steady for an entire night, that is when I cheer! That is when I remind myself not to get discouraged when my blood sugars are high, low, or imperfect.
.
Over the last four years, I’ve learned patience. And I’ve learned to never give up on my dreams. I am so happy that I have achieved my dreams, and I am continuing to do so everyday. Titles and championships are great, but the greatest thing is to be healthy and go out on the water everyday. That was my first goal I made when I was diagnosed four years ago, and that is the only goal I haven’t let myself down with.
.
I am honored to have support as a person and athlete with Type 1 Diabetes by pharmaceutical companies like Companion Medical and Dexcom. They have made my life with disease much more ‘normal’ and easier to manage.
.
This photo was taken 5 days after I was diagnosed on the south beaches of England. I was scheduled to race in my first eurotour and wanted nothing more than to race. With the help of my family, we made a plan and I went. I won the race and haven’t thought again that type 1 diabetes could hold me back.

I lost in the semi-finals sprint today. I gave it my all because I so badly wanted to make the final, but I just didn’t have that extra little kick I needed, so =5th for me today 🙈.
.
I was actually ok and happy with 4th overall, a solid start to the season with a good distance result in my score line leading into the other events. But just now scrolling through Facebook I found out I am 5th overall. It’s not the result that hurts, but it’s the fact I was told one result at the awards ceremony and find out through Facebook that it’s different, kinda bums me out. 😔
.
Anyway, I guess that’s racing and I just need to paddle faster next time! Here’s a really cool shot from the fun distance race by @sicrowthershootcreative. It was really nice to see you again, Si!
