Racing in the waves is my absolute favorite. It definitely requires skill and ocean knowledge, but more importantly the ability to stay calm when things are totally out your control is what separates the pack. I just love this photo from the @appworldtour New York Sup Open last year in Long Beach, NY. The sprint races were so chaotic with windy, rain, swell, and even lightning. I love this moment of calm, catching my breath as the ocean churns behind me. It’s crazy to me how I’m comfortable in this kind of chaos. Honestly I totally love it! It’s just the way God made me I guess. When I look at this picture I feel like God’s telling me that He built me to withstand the waves of life and that with Him, I can stay calm in whatever chaos life brings. Pretty neat. I’m so excited for this season of racing (and life), and I’m really looking forward to more fun like this in the waves! #grateful #determined #psalm934 -

Hairs going up and I’m out there! It might take me a bit to get back in the shape you see in this pic, but I’ll get there. I’m just so grateful that I can get back out there. Have a beautiful day! @virusintl #virusintl

Just got home from my appt with Dr. James Christian Hwang, sports med specialist who added me to his totally booked schedule. I don’t know how I ended up in his care, but thank God I did. He went above and beyond.
Good news and bad news.
Good news is that I’ve been given a green light to “suck it up” and get back on the water and start training for the Pan-American Games and the @appworldtour. Dr’s goal for me is Pan-Ams, but I’m hopeful that I’ll last the whole season, if I’m careful and diligent (no running allowed). I’ll be getting a cortisone shot in my hip in a couple weeks that will help me manage the pain I’m in.
Bad news is that I have early arthritis in both my hips. Because of the way that the heads of my femur are shaped, they rub in the hip socket creating an impingement and poor mobility (FAI). Combine that with the repetitive motion of hinging at the hips paddling for 12+ years, I’ve worn out some of my cartilage and formed cysts on the bone (early arthritis). My right side is much worse than my left b/c I’m regular foot, which has also caused my glute muscles to overwork and become inflamed causing some sciatic nerve pain. I have a slight tear in the labrum, but thank God it’s not too big! I’m not quite sure what the future holds for my hips, but I know that if I keep pushing too hard, and for too long, a hip replacement will most likely be in my future.
I’m an athlete and I’ve used my body as a tool for my job for many years. I wouldn’t change any of it. It’s been incredible. I’m grateful that I’ve been given a 👍🏼 for the Pan-Am Games and I know God will meet me in my pain and give me the strength to push through it. I’ve got a great team of doctors and an awesome PT @dscperformance, and if this year ends up being my final run, I can’t think of a better way to finish things up. I’m not using the “R” word yet, but I’m also not in denial that every athlete has their final day, and I know my purpose goes far beyond paddling.
Thank you all for your 🙏🏼’s and kind words as I’ve been trying to figure this thing out. I’m going to go dust off my board now and get back on the water. #cando #allthings #injesusnameiplay #pickupyourcross

Bio
Candice’s story begins with a love of the ocean. She started surfing at age nine and competing at ten. At eleven, she was thrilled to move with her family to San Clemente, California, one of the best surf towns in the United States. There, she competed in longboarding and shortboarding throughout her adolescence and became captain of the San Clemente High School surf team, helping SCHS take the national title for four consecutive years.
From early on, it seemed Candice’s promise as an ocean athlete knew no bounds.
In 2003, she surprised many by skipping a chance to represent the United States in the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Games of Surfing in South Africa. Instead, Candice moved to Hawaii to pursue an education and surfing full force. (She also earned a B.S. in Tropical Plants and Soil Science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.)
It was during this time the SoCal native’s life changed dramatically. Committing to the call of the ocean, Candice trained and conditioned hard, honored to be mentored by legendary waterman families, like Keaulana, Desoto and Froiseth. Her waveriding skills and endurance continued to advance and gain her attention, soon earning her the badge of “waterman” herself.
Life took a prophetic turn in 2006, when Candice decided to give stand paddle surfing a try, after watching it for season on Oahu’s West Side. Intrigued by yet another way to ride waves, she immediately started teaching herself the sport of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) from what she had learned by watching the skilled waterman of Makaha Beach. With her amazing fitness level and surfing background, Candice Appleby was soon competing against—and beating—men in SUP racing and surfing.

THE QUEEN OF SUP IS BORN
After eight years in Hawaii, Candice returned to San Clemente, proudly making it her home base for training and conditioning. She also co-founded Performance Paddling to provide SUP adult instruction, private coaching, team-building events and kids’ camps, and to help shape the next generation of SUP athletes.
In 2008, at the Duke Kahanamoku Oceanfest, Candice became the first and only woman to beat men in a professional SUP surfing event, winning both the women’s and Open Pro divisions. She went on to claim victory six times at Battle of the Paddle, and twice after it became the Pacific Paddle Games—an event long considered to be the World Championship or “Superbowl” of SUP. She’s also been #1 Female SUP Athlete of the Year three times and has collected 3 gold medals for the United States over an international field at the ISA World Championships in 2015 and 2016.
Today, Candice Appleby is known as a pioneer of SUP and also its foremost champion. ESPN W calls her “Abby Wambach, Serena Williams, Brittney Griner and Danica Patrick all rolled into one. She’s talented, fiercely competitive, tremendously well-respected and a true ambassador of the sport.”
